Hi and to RFUK

You'll need to give us a little more information - like what species you're interested in and what age tortoise you're hoping to get. Then we will try our best to help.

Hi and
The most widely accepted housing for tortoises is an indoor tortoise table. The one in the picture below is a prime example:

Along with the tortoise table you should have a UV tube and a separate basking spot lamp - or If you prefer, an all in one tube such as the zoomed powersun UV. These lights are a necesity when they are being housed indoors, they simulate the suns rays and help them produce Vitamin D3 Which enables them to absorb Calcium and have a strong healthy shell. The Substrate (bedding) Is a bit of a grey area, Some people say use hemp BUT There has been a rise in the number of tortoise deaths that COULD be linked with this particular substrate. According to the tortoise trust, the Hemp, If ingested could cause Impaction and then death. (Just to let you know) The substrate that most people are switching to is a 60/40 mix of sterilised topsoil and playsand - this stays lovely and moist and is NON-TOXIC if ingested. Other must-have items in the table are:
A log hide (So the tortoise has a place to retreat to at night and for a feeling of safety) A water bowl (tortoises need this to keep themselves hydrated, they DO NOT recieve all the water they need from their food alone) A Slab of slate ( For feeding off and basking under the spotlight - this keeps their beaks trimmed to an acceptable length) And some stones for interest!

This Caresheet that was made by Katiexx is brilliant, It will tell you pretty much all you need to know to start out: Med tortoise Care sheet

Hi again, I've just read your thread in the Newbie section and seen that you are thinking of a Horsfield. I've answered you more fully in there. There's a sticky in the Newbie section too which is well worth you looking at:

MED TORTOISES... useful links

IF its small then a big rubbermaid storage box or underbed storage thing would be good, but BIG so they can explore.
