Default Dwarf Hermanns in/near Essex

Considering getting a baby Dwarf Hermann Tortoise, done the research and have a spare, reasonable size viv and lights etc (spare snake bits) that i can use.

Found a place that does Dwarf Hermans near to me, 'Wiltons' but having read a few bad stories on here thinking of giving them a miss. Can anyone recommend a good shop/breader in Essex that has/breads the Dwarfs?

Cheers
Paul

These tortoises are suprisingly hard to get hold of. I know of someone who got 3 at the Hamm event in March.

Assuming you mean Testudo hermanni hermanni (the Western Hermann)... good luck finding a breeder with available hatchlings and if you do let us know where they are!

Is there any specific reason you want a Western rather than Eastern Hermann?

Be careful just using a normal viv as it may not have enough ventilation and you may need to convert it (open the top or turn it on it's back and take the doors off). It'll need to be big enough to provide a good temp gradient as well.... 32degs C under the basking light and a cool end of 20degs C.

Good luck in your search.

When i say viv basically i have a 3 foot viv for my corn snake. Underneath it has shelfing and a cupboard. (sorry for the crap pic only picked it up y'day and thats the for sale pic)

Plan is to convert the bottom shelf into a viv with a sleeping area in the cupboard to the left. That way he has a dark section, roaming around section, and when i'm home can slide the door open so he can walk around my room.

Reason i want one is they do not grow as big. As the Dwarf grows to 14cm whereas the Eastern grows to about 20cm (i believe) i know its only 6cm but would like a tortoise that stays small. However if i can't find one i will get a 'normal' Hermann.

Found a dealer in Essex about 25 mins from me that sells them for £125 at 1yr old, however a couple of people have advised against using them so was just after another option.

Thanks for the advice though, will make sure its well ventelated!

Hermanni Hermanni are extremely hard to find, There are people on Tortsmad that have been looking for ages and havent found a single breeder that does them - good look though lol

Are you planning on putting glass doors on the front then? It looks a tiny area for a tort if you just mean the bottom and one of the cupboards... how big an area would it be? I don't see how you'd get a good temp gradient or enough ventilation in an area that small.

Have to agree with you Tina, it doesnt look big enough even if the tort is a dwarf.
