Default Turtles ARE Reptiles.

It really annoys me the amount of people (owners and shop workers), that seem to see turtles/terrapins as fish with shells. A local fish specialist has started selling them with "full setup" for £200, aswell as the tank which holds about 20L of water, you get the terrapin, low wattage clip on light, some (potentially lethal) gravel, and a few rocks for them to "bask on" (something which is kinda pointless without sufficient heat and UVB) and a useless internal filter. This shop doesn't sell any lizards or snakes, and would be the first to tear into you if you were keeping fish incorrectly.

It's my birthday next month, and for it I want the government to ban the sale of all hatchlings - apart from very expensive rare species. Is that too much to ask?

Why would you want the sale of hatchling turtles banned? In the right hands- they have excellent homes- just like any other reps.

If you feel the turts are being misstreated- you need to report the shop- or suggest to them where they are going wrong.

Why dont you politely (and i do mean politely, dont go down there ranting and swearing!) talk them through what they are doing wrong and try to educate them. Stupidly, they might not realise the commitment they have taken on by trying to diversify into turtles, and have clearly not done enough, if any, research. Try putting a basic care sheet together yourself for them to read through, as they are much more likely to take things in if you write it down. Its much better to attempt to work with this people than to talk badly of them once youve left their shop, they obviosuly dont know any better and will continue to sell the turtles with appaulling setups until someone steps in and tells them otherwise!

aye, they are reptiles, and they must be cared for properly.
go tell them.
maybe you could ask them "do you have any reptiles" and if they say "no" ask if you find any reptiles in the shop can you have them, they will prolly be confused and either say erm..yeh...or just stare blankly at you... at which point you can begin the education...

Well if not banned then the price increased greatly, similar to Tortoises - then maybe more people would take the time to research their care. There's thousands of Sliders etc in rescues up and down the country, I've paid for hatchlings before, but that was before I realised just how many new decent new homes.

I can't go preaching to every shop and home!

You just need to point out thier mistake, where is the place?

The best thing you can do if you dont want to go down in person is write a polite letter and include a care sheet, if they ignor your advise then its time to get angry
