For starters shes in a vivarium with glass but I have put a strip of car graphic vinyling on the outside of the glass to simulate and edge but shes never really tried continuously climbing it anyway but the more major concern is her diet I have always fed her dark leafy greens such as kale, rocket, spring greens, occassionally cabbage and other random tesco's salad mixes and different types of lettuces (not iceberg) plus tomatoes and strawberries and occassionally cucumber but according to this forum thats completely wrong so what do I do ?? How quickly can I change her diet to the right one without upsetting her constitution and I use nutrobal but how many days of the week should her food be dusted with this? all her lighting and temperatures are correct and on hot days she gets to go out in the garden and gaze on grass - any opinions welcome

Hi and welcome to the Shelled section

As others have said a change in her diet to edible plants and weeds is definitely the right way to go. I don't know which stickys you've looked at but these two are really good plant lists:

Diet and healthy growth

You'll probably find you already have some of the things on them growing in your garden.

What species is your tort? As Terrypin has already said it would be good if you could post pics so that people can advise you of any other problems which might be identifiable visually.

You say you're using nutrobal... a small sprinkling on food every day is recommended. Are you using any form of calcium as this should be sprinkled on the food every day too - limestone flour is a good source. Putting a cuttlefish in for her to nibble on would be good to as this will not only give her calcium it will keep her beak length down.

If you haven't already take a look through this thread which has links to some very good advice on med tort keeping (assuming you have a med tort of course!):

MED TORTOISES... useful links

Good luck with the change in diet.

thanks to every one for their replies and helpful advice - have been pulling out clover from the garden tonight - been giving dandelion leaves for a few days now which seems to be ok although she doesnt seem to be pooing that much - is this a problem I should be aware of - I need to get better pictures (will take tomorow when shes awake) as I call her a girl but she may not well be just when we bought her the breeder took an 'educated guess' as they called it to give us a female but I knew that it was really hard to sex them at that age and arent bothered if she's male or female although it would be nice to know - she's called speedy anyway so pretty generic name

not very good pics but I will get better ones but I dunno how much you can tell by these:

She's gorgeous but I'm biased because I love Hermanns.

Yes you can use calypso... that's pure calcium like limestone flour, though limestone flour is much cheaper and you could use that for your beardie as well.

Do you give her a bath every day? This normally encourages them to poo and pass urates.

dont worry about her not pooing as much for a few weeks. the wet kitchen food like salad passes through a tortoises digestive tract MUCH quicker than fibrous food like weeds and grass. so they derive much less nutritional value from wet food than they do from proper graze type diet. they get soooo much more from graze as it takes up to 28 days for it to pass from one end to the other, so more nutrition is absorbed from it.

and i love the pics, my first tortoise was a hermanns.
