There is no difference in the type of enclosure you use. People try to anthropomorphize the behavior of a tortoise or turtle.

They will pace and try to get out of any enclosure regardless if they can see out or not.

Some chelonians seem to actually be entertained by being able to see out of their enclosure.

The important point is to make sure you can provide an enclosure large enough so the chelonian can be properly entertained and so you can provide a proper temperature gradient... the material the enclosure is made of plays a very minor point in the behavior of a turtle or tortoise.

The main problem with housing tortoises, well mediteranean & African tortoises anyway, is the humidity levels get too high for them which can cause problems.

i have to say that tortoises DO seem to be better suited to well ventilated spaces. Whn i put my juvenile leos in a viv they crawled the walls. but they seemed very happy in an indoor rabbit hutch ( type with the cage on top and a deep tray at the bottom) and stopped pacing the edges as much. Some glass vivs offer wonderfull ventilation these days, i have some for my beardies BUT they cost a fortune to keep at the right temps as glass looses heat very quickly.

If the enclosure is large enough and you are using a dry substrate and you keep the enclosure clean there is no reason for you to get high humidity in a viv.

These same cautions apply to a tortoise table also.

fully agree, my beardies need desert conditions and they live in a viv quite happily. they are very susceptible to breathing problems if put in high humidty areas, but as long as the cage is cleaned out every day, they are fine. But they also seem a little more blessed with intelligence and actually understand that the invisible barrier is not going to go away!

I will not repeat this to my tortoises... it would send them into a depressive tailspin that would last for days... that's about how long it would take them to figure out... it was a lizard person who thinks such a thing...
