is it a clamp lamp you are using? they can go a bit wonky, mine had the same problem. see if you can use a cable tie or bulldog clip to attach the wire to the table somehow, that will give you 2 seperate anchor points so should hold it steady.

Could you put a long hook onto the wood to suspend it from? Can't really think of anything else. I use the lamp stand and it's excellent - you need to buy the large one though if you go for that option as the small one wouldn't extend high enough.

I don't think Clamp Lamps are really suitable for MVBs anyway, all but the largest ones don't leave enough space around the bulb for ventilation and can cause overheating, and as you've found the clamp itself isn't strong enough to hold it in place.
The holders made specially for MVBs or poultry lamp holders are much better, they are also deeper so provide better protection for the bulb itself, the bulbs protrude from the shallow Clamp Lamp shade making them vulnerable to accidental damage.

Yeah the bulb does protrude from the bottom of the shade. Is this OK?
We have worked it out now with a bit of DIY, some wood and a shelf bracket! My torts are happily underneath eating now!

The smaller sizes of Clamp Lamp can also cause the bulb to overheat.
