Default Smallest Aquatic Turtle

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to purchase the smallest aquatic turtle possible. I've heard rumors of purchasing "Penny Turtles" at Flea Markets, but I've also heard that "penny" is just a term for hatchling, so they obviously don't stay that size. Could anyone recommend a small aquatic turtle that STAYS small?

thanks in advance

Common Musk Turtles are one of the smallest commonly available turtles in the trade,Maps get bigger than people imagine, especially if the correct species label is not given.

.......and especially if it's a female, it's only the male maps that stay under 6", the females can exceed 10" ,and at that size they're very bulky too.

african helmeted turtles generally dont get very big. the females have been recorded at usual turtle size, but myns 4 inchs and has stayed that way since i first found her. so i think AHTs are a good choice.

Yours would be very unusual if it stays at 4" though, they average around 8" fully grown but can exceed 12", not very often admittedly but it does happen.

The only species guaranteed not to grow big are the Musks, with the Common Musk being the smallest at around 4-5", Razorback and Loggerhead Musks get a bit bigger.
