There are certain groups that seem to thrive on slagging off people.
It's really a shame because the new keeper that is exposed to only one point of view will obviously follow that point of view which gives rise to a kind of mob mentality. It's also scary... to know there are people who actually seem to enjoy gunning for individuals. Ed Quote:

I have kept tortoises for 25 yrs now and only really joined forums etc the last 4 yrs and in those 4 yrs (the last year in particular) I have never had so much hated resentment towards me its so weird that people will stoop so low as to totally incriminate someone for being successful both with husbandry,re- homing and being dam right helpful and generous.
Well I certainly wont give up they are as you say Ed a band of mob attack individuals bitter and jealous of someones success terrible people out there and I'm sure they will read this too. D |

that must have really pissed you off darren. i dont quite know what to say.
i have stopped being as active on other groups as i found some of the tactics people use to acquire tortoises a little, well, agressive. along the lines of " well the hermanns you were bought are obviously going to die, they are from slovenia, so give them to me and i will make sure that the ££££ vets bills are paid and then they will survive. if you dont you are condemning them to death". i was a newby at the time and almost believed it, only my husband laughed it off and told me to form my own opinions. that was years ago, luckily ilistened to him or i would have givenupontorts.

Well... I know first hand the nastyness of some... just check out the reviews of my book on AmazonUK. I'll be willing to bet they haven't even read the book.
The point of the post was to get a feel from others on this mentality... it just seems so wrong to me to turn someone in like that without trying to resolve the issue directly... if it even needs resolving. Do you expect others to follow your standard? Should you be held to the standard of others...? Ed Quote:

Thats quite a list of specific allegations. Not just a person unfamiliar with tortoise husbandry getting the wrong impression (which is sort of what the original post was about)

How about next time, I'll buy one, you buy one, we'll swop them over when we get out of the shop and our halos will shine as they are now 'rehomed' not 'bought' Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking any rehoming activities, these were private messages sent to someone asking for help. Rather than offer help, people chose to undermine and discourage. And it wasn't a case of 'consider rehoming with tt or sw' it was 'rehome to me'. |

To be fair to the person who called the RSPCA about the Wakefield Keeper he did report out of genuine concern. He certainly was'nt pursuing some kind of spiteful vendetta. What happened re Ed's book review and Darrens recent visit is something totally different - we all know that the online community for the this hobby can get incredibly bitchy. Why? Sad cases venting their spleens in an anonymous manner. Well meant people who have completely lost any sense of proportion - I think some of them spend to far to much time involving themselves in 'tortoises'. Wanting to be in the 'right gang', turf fights etc.

Hmmm....well I speak as I find...so until I have met someone I will not comment.
However as Off Topic as this is.......I have met Darren....face to face...and seen how his torts are kept. I was amazed.....his outdoor enclosures are beautiful/natural....he talks the hind leg off of you, cos he cares for them so much and he is a great guy. I have been on the recieving end of his generosity... So heaven help me if I come across the people who reported him.....I wish people would stand up and counted. As to Ed's original question....it depends...but as a rule of thumb guide I guess that if someone invited me I would have to give them the benefit of the doubt, both to motive and knowledge and I would neither report them or slag them off. I would report them if cruelty in the extreme was obvious...but not before discussing it and giving them a chance or offering to help. If it got to reporting them I would tell them first of my intentions.... |
