Default Showing off your pets...

I got a question for the group...

What if you invited someone into your home and they did not like the way you kept your animals? They then went so far as to report the way you kept your animals to the animal welfare people... How would you feel?

On the flip side... what if you saw the way a collecton or pet was kept and didn't like it... how would you handle it?

I know many of you are herpers and have decent collections of herps.

What this comes down to is perspective and how much someone should get into your business or how much you should get into someone elses business.

It rather depends how bad the conditions are. We all have off days where you forget to fill to water bowel or hav'nt spot picked the substrate. If I saw that I would just leave it be. However if the conditions were really dreadful then I would say something & if the were downright cruel then I would contemplete taking it further.

Let's say they have 4 animals of 3 different species... about 4 inches scl in a 4 ft long viv with woodchip substrate and a heat mat under the substrate at one end... you also notice some condensation on the side of the glass... otherwise the animals are relatively healthy looking...

What would you consider poor conditions... or cruel?

would depend on the species of animal i geuss. a 4 inch leopard tortoise with a 4inch redfoot with a 4 inch indioan star and a turtle all together, well i probably would say something along the lines of " arent they supposed to have species specific requirements?". if the animals were suffering and the person couldnt actually show any knowledge of the animals and there requirements then i guess i would have a problem. AFter all, we all make mistakes and need some guidance, but a refusal to acknowledge that something may be better improved is silly. we can aways improve on things.

if the animals werent suffering, or i had zero knowledge of that species and trusted that the person involved knew more than me, i would let it be. after asking why they were like that when i assumed that they would be kept differently.

why whats up Ed?

It's not the way I would keep them but I could'nt say that was cruel.

There was a post on another list way back when and the OP ripped into a person who could not defend themselves. The OP went so far as to call animal control. Animal control checked the guy out and found nothing wrong... Animal control then became the target because... they didn't know what they were doing...

I was just looking for a perspective of this group which is pretty much what I would expect.

I have previously reported a neighbour at my sister's for the state of how they were keeping their dog. If it was down to ignorance I would try to educate that person in what they were doing were wrong, or give them pointers and tips to help them. If it was blatant cruetly, then I would report them to the RSPCA.

It's funny you mention that because apparently that person lost his entire collection in a house fire.

Ed Its funny you mention/add this post, I have wondered how I could but this story that happened to me across here, this has given me the chance.
So here it is
I only recently had a visit from the local animal welfare authority's ( we wont mention names) after a report from someone saying my animals /tortoises are in appalling conditions mixed animals, living in there own filth with no food water and dieing off at the extent I am passing the babies bred here off to other people as I cant afford the vet bills it , tortoises apparently are being battery farmed forced commercial diets ,artificial heat inducing elderly and sick animals to produce so many offspring the adults were in desperate need of a break and certainly need removing for there own welfare.
Anyway who ever it was had either been here or had listened to idol gossip from some one else who has a vendetta against me something that's quite common for me these days .
I got the all clear how kind of them

D
