Default Importance of hibernation?

Now i know theres some species of tortoises that hibernate in the winter and slow down in the summer, but if you don't hibernate them is the any long term ill effects if it doesn't hibernate for years? Or any ill effects from it not hibernating for one winter? Thanks.
