There are some mercury vapor lamps that put out a surprising amount of uvb. That is why they've become so popular.

It's not really D3 that is needed but D2... I could be wrong here but that is what I remember... D3 is converted to D2 by uvb... I think.

Theres on post on this and other lists... Calcium Metabolism... so a search and you should find a post of mine where it explains calcium metabolism in detail.

I'll take your word for it. Thanks.

Believe it or not I love that post, which I'm not the author of, because it is one of the most simple explanations of the mechanism for the relationship between vitamin D and calcium.

Andy/Claire.....breast feeding is best???? A very poor comparison in my opinion.

Breast feeding MAY be best for those of us who are living in a fairly affluent society...but tell that to those who live in poverty, for their children to have the best nutrition...the bottle is a neccessity. So unless you are a hundred percent sure you are providing the best, most nutritious balanced diet to humans, mammals, reptiles etc...then dont knock what is offered/researched/used.

On a more personal note...I breast fed 3 and bottle fed 3....no difference at all, all in their 20's to 30's and nothing marks one group out from the other.....
