Softies aren't really a very good starter species, they have rather specialised habitat and dietary requirements compared to some of the more common hard-shelled species, and as you have already found can be quite aggressive, but you've got it now so it's a bit late for that sort of advice I suppose!

You don't seem to know very much about it, did you read any care sheets before you got it, or get advice from anyone who already keeps them?

How big is the turtle and how big is the tank? What filter have you got? Lighting? What are your water and basking spot temps? What are you feeding it on at the moment?

Can you post some photos of the turt and setup?

Softies are primarily carnivorous, so they will do well on a diet based on good quality pellets supplemented with fresh lean meat, fish, snails, insects etc...

Do you know exactly which species you have?

You know it needs a bigger tank, but you only got it yesterday? If you post some pics of the turtle and tank setup, I'm sure we'd be able advise you more accurately. As far as I'm aware spiny softshells are not also known as "pig snout turles", fly river turtles are also known as "pig nosed turtles" , you need to be 100% sure on which species you have, again pictures are really the only way to tell for sure.

Check the dates James, this is an old thread and he got it a few months ago on 22nd July, a bit worrying that it's spent 3 months in a tank that's probably too small and nothing has been done about it !

Softies are noted for biting anything that comes near, it'll probably be pretty stressed if the tank is to small, so it's hardly surprising if it's taking it out on the contents of the tank. You seem to know what needs to be done, so why not just do it?
