Default what UV tubes do you use

I currently have a repti glo 5% for tropical animals and am looking to move my med tort into a bigger area so need to upgrade my tube to a 36" or larger just wondering whats the best to change it to as I have read on a caresheet they should be 10% anyway but all the 10% says desert reps or dont state anything - I did buy an arcadia D3 but they sent me the D3+ by mistake but am keeping it as it will go well in my lizards viv when the old one needs replacing - what do ppl suggest though before I go and get another one

I used to use a reptisun 10 but I've recently changed from a separate uvb and heat lamp to a megaray 100w combined mercury vapour and I'd definitely recommend them. The torts are much more active and eating more... even my little lazy one who I used to have to wake up.

Combined uvb bulbs are the best 5% does nothing may as well not have it on. Go for the mega ray 100w or trex flood 100w

ah ok - gr8 thanks for the replies!! the only thing is and this may sound like a dumb query but because its a bulb wouldnt it have a narrow range? my tort tends to be pretty active and walks all over his enclosure (4ft x 2ft) is he still going to get enough UVB if he's out of the direct 'shine' of the lamp?

I would recommend the Megaray now, simply the best on the market.

You can get them here:

No with them being a flood lamp the UVB gets directed everwhere. I use megaray and trex bulbs. I find megarays better. They are more expensive but last alot longer and are 100% better. I have noticed an increase of food intake and activity in all my tortoises using these bulbs.

That's odd because MegaRay and T-Rex are the exact same bulbs, made to the same design in the same factory, just different branding.

MegaRay/T-Rex are also narrow flood lamps, neither a spot nor a true flood they are between the two, Powersun are the only true flood MVB I believe, but the UVB output decays rapidly at ranges of more than a couple of feet, so it's debatable whether there's much advantage over a wide area anyway.

Hiya Ed - I have read in your posts before that you dont like using things like this but I have been recommended by my herp vet to get one as unfortunately I didn't know that you were meant to change them every 6 months so for about a year my tort didnt have sufficient UVB and this has resulted in MBD which has caused my tort's shell not to grow up enough and is hence quite flat- there was some weakening in his back legs also but luckily I have managed to catch it in time and reverse this but I can't do anything about his shell as its not going to grow anymore upright - I am gutted but the main thing is it doesnt affect him in any way and I dont want to create any more problems hence need to get the best thing possible - due to the totally rubbish weather in Wales he hasnt been out much either - well he has but not enough to combat the lack of UV he's had in his inside enclosure
