Hermann is the advised starter species yeah? Does the sub-species make such difference?
Testudo hermanni boettgeri (commonly known as Eastern Hermanns) are the most commonly kept and the easiest to obtain. Testudo hermanni hermanni (commonly known as Western Hermanns) are smaller and more difficult to obtain.

Hermanns are a lovely species... but then I'm biased.

Thanks for all the comments guys ...

Tina, I used to incubate on the slightly cooler side, but still managed to hatch approx. 50/50 sexes. My incubator is set up so that the temps vary by a degree or two, depending on location of the eggs. It appears that I do hatch more females than males, but I do not set out to hatch just females, using a higher end temperature.

tortlady, Iberas tend to hatch beyond the 60 days, so none as yet, but its just a matter of days now.

terrypin, thanks mate, its great to hatch hermanns again, although the overal percentage of fertile eggs is low. Like yourself, my eggs were laid later than usual this year too, its all down to the climate for torts, when laying naturally...T.T.

Cheers Pete...

Speaking of markings/variations, checkout the 2nd hermanns hatchling to be born today, especially the marginal scutes...I guess thats what makes each tort individual...T.T.
