Default Redfoot Question?

After some research i have decided that a Redfoot Tortoise is for me!..

I used to have Leopards.. And i think the more sensible option is to go for something smaller.. If i was to get 2 .. can anyone tell me what the ideal size enclosure would be ? ...
My hubby is a Chippy so i can get him to make a tort table.. And also the prices seem to vary so much on the net.. what sort of price am i looking at ?

Are you looking at youngsters or adults?

i dont mean to upset you but redfoots are really not that much smaller than leos. i have seen some redfoots that are bigger than my 16lb female leopard! i know some can grow to be bigger and some can end up smaller but the average size between the two species is not that dissimilar in captivity. a few inches if that.

Agree Ali, I rehomed a male redfoot last year and his growth over 10 months is staggering. He is now about 13" long, about 8" tall, (his tail is about 5" long!!) and weighs in at 6kg and still growing!!

All in all there is not much between a leo and red in my opinion, as adults both would require the same large amount of space.

I dont have anything set up yet.. as iim still researching.. i have a large garden which i could section off in the future..

I would probably prefer youngsters... although one of my leopards was a BIG boy... so im not sure..

I do like the Big ones..Now im even more confused... My first love is leopards...and ive been looking into redfoots just wasnt sure how to house them effectively indoors...

Options...
i dont want a hibernating tort...
Money is a factor as the more it costs the longer i will have to wait for it!
I can build an outdoor enclosure... and i have space indoors ... erm...

help!!!...

God i would never have of got 'rid' of them... I didnt have a choice.. I couldnt take any pets where i went...

I went through a messy break up.. and i couldnt take my darlin torts with me, so i rehomed them through the tortoise trust..

I had to get out of a situation quickly and i did what i had to do... and tell you not a day goes by when i dont think of them...

Now 4yrs later, im secure and settled.. and im thinking that the time is right...

I keep both reds and leopards. Leopards are rounder in shape where as reds are more shaped like a giant tick tack lol

Depends what size red foot 4x7 would house adults great.

Wouldnt bother me whether they were young or old tbh..
I may look in to rehoming , to offer a home to one who needs it rather than a baby... more thought and research needed!

As you keep both redfoots and leos .. are their personalties very different ? ...

My leos had a 'bull in a china shop' attitude.. well my big boy did!

i didnt mean to offend you. But obviosuly things happen that make us have to change our lives. When i was in the early stages of pregnancy my doctor told me i would probably end up in a wheelchair for 6 months. i really did consider selling or rehoming all of the torts because of there size. i just wouldnt have been able to pick them up, the biggest sulcatta male was16 inches and about 2 and a half stone. But while i may have had to give them up, i could have managed quite well with a few smaller torts. Luckily my husband and kids looked after all of the animals for me so i kept my torts and only had to rehome the big male sulc. but that was because he kept attacking my male rottie!

If you have got settled and feel its a good time then go for it. i love my torts and really couldnt imagine having to part with my babies. especially my leos, theyre my favourites ( but dont tell the others!).
