I havent used them.....on my now 60 tortoises (babies...17 at the moment,....wont be staying).

Except when I had a sickly ibera 18mth old and I bought them in despair....she ate them and then went onto weeds and is fighting fit now....

Will I use them again?....yup if I had to.....

I don't believe in taring down in flames, each to there own, we all have the torts best interests at heart, other wise we wouldn't be on here researching them etc.

My issue is that i rehomed two torts that were in a dreadful state even though they had been well loved, their main diet had been pellets. For about three or four days their poo contained whole tortoise pellets and the consistency was deadful. I can't work out how these pelletts can be at all beneficial if the exit the tortoise still whole.

I know I have a bit of a vested interest in feeding fresh foods as I sell them, but like anyone else, I have times when unexpected hitches pop up and I need some fast food. When that happens I prefer to nip to the corner shop (which I know is a luxary not everyone has) for a bag of sprin leaves.

Interestingly I did do a bit of an experiement a few weeks ago as I have several torts that before they came to me just ate pellets. so I offered them two trays. One full of weeds, one fulld of pellets. Not one chose the pellets.

The next day I tried salad (lettuce, cucumber, toms) on one tray and weeds on the other. They went for the salad!!!!!! After they pollished that off they ate the weeds. Not what I had brought them up to do!!! lol
they didn't touch the pellets at all I am afraid.

On all accounts here... my results are totally different after using a pelleted diet for upwards of 8 years.

Given a choice... pellets... every time.

If you are seeing pellets at the other end there is something dreadfully wrong. Even if you are seeing color at the back end... same thing.

What kind of pellets are you offering or have been fed?

This why, i said I am no experton pellets EJ, I am fairly sure they were trex pellets, but I didn't keep them on that diet, so they stopped after a few days. They didn't pass any whole vegetation though. I did also have them treated for worms once they arrived. I don't know if this would be a factor aswell and I don't know if they definitely had worms but I suspect they did.

I have to say I was a little nervous posting in this thread because of previous experience where things get heated. But so far this discussion has be really great and respectful.
Thanks

If it was T-Rex... I don't see any problem feeding the stuff.

What's also ironic is that I've been slammed where it was said that 8 years is not enough time to say if the diet will do damage or not... Then... 25 years is still not enough time...

I also have to admit for the first, that when my tort was poorly last year and wouldnt eat i feed him T-rex pellets and he took an instant interest in them, and is now a happy healthy tort. I feel it is nice to be able to have freedom of speech about peoples different methods without the fear of being shot down and immediatly made to feel bad for doing something that isnt "Whats best". How can anyone detemind what is best for a tortoise that doesnt live in its natural habitat. Thats why i now do what i feel is right for my tortoise and he has never been happier, healthier and more alert.

Sorry for the rant just wanted to say whats been building up for months and now felt like a good time to get it off my chest xx

If you call that a rant... you have not been on some chats. That was very diplomatically stated.

You keyed onto an important point... what is best. Who really knows... if they do... they stand to make a fortune.

When i got my two hermanns 6 months ago from a pet shop (I now know I shouldn't have got them from a pet shop, but too late now and I feel as if I have saved them !!) the pet shop sold me pellets to feed them on. They wouldn't touch the stuff after I brought them home despite being fed them in the pet shop!

Welldon't shoot me but i am going to get some for Henry ready for the colder rainier autumn days as it is not fair to drag my kids out in all weathers evryday when it is raining. Henry has weeds in the garden but only dandies, plantain, clover and sowthistle we have to go out and look for other so he has a variety. This way he will be fed both and not be missing out
