Default tortoise pellets

hi.
i would like to share my expierence with pellets.
i got in a rehomer who was very sick, underweight etc.
i was what i shal call a tortoise "follower" and believed that tortoses could only survive by doing things 1 way..
however over many weeks of worry, and the tortoise getting worse i plucked up the courage to buy tortoise pellets..
almost imediately i saw an improvement..
the tortoise gained weight and even started to grow.
i still agree that variety is the key..which is why i use pellets a few times a week.

anyway, dont be afraid to try your own tecniques..
trial and error...if in doubt try things your self

ps hey!!!!!!!

Hi Happytort

I must say I am not a huge fan of pellets, but............

I have a rescue Spur-Thighed Tortoise (T.g.g) who I have had for about a month now. He came to me not eating, not poohing, one eye closed over, & underweight. I tried him with a variety of weeds first. He refused. Than I went for fruit & veg (another no no really but I just wanted to get him eating something). Again, he refused. Then I tried him on pellets, & he munched his way through quite a lot. I am still offering him pellets but am trying to mix in chopped weeds with the pellets. He isn't daft & he works his way round the weed bits.

Not many people are going to touch this one...

I use them for my turtles and tortoises... the best thing that's ever happened to the keeping of chelonians...

...but I think most know my position on this topic.

It's interesting that you point out if the pellets is not better for some keepers than others.

Isn't this about the tortoises? Isn't the ultimate goal to keep the tortoise alive and healthy as long as possible and not the convictions of the keeper?

I guess I missed that chapter.

(yes... you said the same thing)

Id say whatever the tortoises prefer!

In the end, the pellets are designed with nutrition in mind arent they? So if the tortoise likes them, then so be it.

Mine wont touch the things, and would rather munch into a dandelion field any day from what ive seen over the past week. Which is fine with me, because it seems more natural, and in the long run, its cheaper!

Most days I soak some pellets into warm water and offer a bunch of weeds too. My pair of Hermanns love 'em

our two have a mixture of each ....... some days they only have weeds, other days they will have pellets and we will offer a mixture of both ......... the reason why?
So that we make sure they are getting all the nutrition they can ...... sometimes you can't be sure if the variety of weeds you offer cover all the bases so pellets are used to supplement the weeds
they will eat either .... they aren't fussy ..... they are growing well and are healthy

Mmm, not too many people have posted in this thread. When I saw the title, I expected a thousand hard-core tortoise people to mob it & tear it down in flames!

Personally I think the 'hardcore' that used to refuse to think that pellets are good for your tort have read the views of others and realised that by flaming these types of thread aren't getting them any where due to the facts stated by those that use the pellets ............. along with the 'vivs will kill your tort' comments ......... not everyone agrees with it but when you can back up your arguement with proven evidence then it makes other people think a bit before posting ....... which in my opinion is good as it gives everyone a balanced view on the benefits of both
