Default red foots ambiant heat or basking spot ?

hi ,all afer weeks of struggling to keep my 2 redfoots temp up in the table ive got a big viv .
if i put the ceramic in it goes way to hot (may be get a thermostate to help)
i have a low whot bulb in at the mo plus uv bulb ,temp is sitting nicely at 85 ,
the thing is i know it sounds daft but it doesnt feel as hot for them as the table did but i couldnt get that above 80
so my question is are they better with the ambiant temp in the viv (which is also better for the humidity)
or would they be better in the table with hotter basking spot but not a great over all temp
i hope that makes sense .
they do seem more active at the mo.

How long is the viv? If the tortoises were self regulating in the Table... I'd suggest that. If they were burried in a corner in the Table... I'd go with the viv.

you really do need a thermostat for the ceramic heater. they can be very dangerous if they are not controlled. I personally would suggest putting them back in the table with the ceramic heater on the cool end with a thermostat and a 100w spotlight at the basking end. then you should have no problem with your background temps. this is exactly the thing i have just done for my mums redfoots as her her temps werepretty low in the cool end.

You definately need a thermostat for the bulb. A day/night one for redfoots.

The viv may feel cooler to you as you aren't feeling/getting the heat loss from the bulb. If the heat isn't kept in, the thermostat registers the cold and switches the bulb on. So in a table the bulb will be on much longer to heat the same area (depending where the sensor is) as lots of heat will escape immediately upwards, heating the room.

You should have no trouble providing a temperature gradient in the viv with the use of a rheostat.

you can get awide range of thermostats. have you decided on the type you will get? lucky reptile do a statand combined timer, so your lights will come on at the specific time. then there is the difference between pulse proportional stats and normal on/off stat. pulse proportional is xcellent at providing a stable temp but an on/off stat will have 2c either side of your chosen temp.

no matter what stat you chose, i would suggest eaving the stat and ceramic lamp on 24/7 set at your chosen temp . the ceramic lamp will only come on if/when the temp drops too low.

There is some advice that is being thrown out there regarding Redfoots that is nonsense.

Redfoots do not come from humid areas. I can say that with confidence. Redfoots are primarily grassland to transition zone (grassland to forrest) animals. Their normal habitat is relatively dry.

The best you should do is provide a small area that you can keep humid... a humid hide... even that is not a necessity but it is benificial.

I'm sure fungus is not a really good thing.
