Can you get a pic? If it was closer to 3" SCL it should be possible to sex. At this size normally males will have very long tails.

Those are good prices. My regular LFS said they could order me a Musk Turtle but it would cost €80 - over £60......I've been reading up on the behaviour of all three turtle types mentioned in my OP and the synopsis seems to be that:

Maps (5-6")
- avid swimmers and baskers
- can be skittish and only the males stay small
- very messy so high water quality is essential

Musks (4-5")
- an active species but tend to be more nocturnal
- don't bask as much as other species
- can be shy and require ample tank decor

Muds (3-4")
- poor swimmers and need extra land area
- shallow water level required
- not as fussy about water quality but strong filtration recommended

Is this a fair assessment of all three genera? Based on those criteria, I'd prefer a male Map or a Musk but I'm just balking a little at the price of the latter...

Sounds about right, but I would always maintain that pristine water quality is essential for all species, there's no excuse for dirty water.

No problem there. I'm used to maintaining six fish tanks by doing a weekly 30-40% water change so I'll be doing the same with the turtle tank. Plus I got a filter recommended for double the tank size so that should do the job ok.
