Default Humid Hides

so I am thinking about making a humid hide for a tort I think I am gonna have to over winter this winter. Can I ask if any one has ever used one with their med torts? And if so, what did you make it out of?

In my table I have a seed tray filled with soil which I keep damp. At night I put another seed tray upside down on top, which has a hole cut in for the torts to get in and out. On top of this upturned seed tray I place piece of towel which is just damp which helps keeps the humidity up as the seed tray has holes in it.

In the day I take the top tray off and it's just another area for the torts to go into while they're active.

I have an area in the middle of the table which is slate then an area of aspen where the basking lamp is... this keeps the humid and dry areas separate.

Two of my torts choose to sleep in the humid area every night (the two 1 year olds) but the two year old mostly chooses to sleep buried in aspen.

Whether it will work and help with smooth growth time will tell.

I think there's a thread similar to this a little ways down.

I believe all tortoises benefit from a humid hide which can be as simple as a tray/box with any substrate which can be kept moist. A layer of leaf litter on top will help maintain the moisture. Turning the substrate will help prevent mold and insects.

I wanted to cut and paste some points addressing humid hides/burrows in another thread...

Some seem to think humid hides are overrated... I'm not one of them.

Tortoises will consistantly seek out a moist/humid area to bed down...

What a great 'observation' to make Tina. As you say time will tell

Thanks for your thoughts. I have alwaysed provided spray the enclosure, one side more than the other, but I don't this creates enough humidity. Has any body tried making a hide with sphagnum moss?

I have a seed tray filled with moss which I keep damp. One likes to sit in this and likes to sit in the damp soil which the weeds are planted in, the other one does go on it but doesn't spend a great deal of time sitting on it. I don't have it covered. Both of them chose to sleep snuggled up together in their hide which is ecobark.

I glued a sponge to the top of a plastic hide and 'water' it daily. I've noticed they go in there more often but prefer to sleep overnight under the basking stone which is not humidified.

Someone needs to tell Maude this
She slept in it when it was the seed tray design Tina advised, but she tipped over due to the low sides so I replaced it with a box which I spray the soil in,same as the tray and it has moss in it but she wont go near moss til its dried out
