I am a memeber of the BCG and seem to learn a little bit more information every time I get a newsletter. For instance I received their yearly journal in the last few days and it was interesting to know that mature clover leaves actually contain cyanide. The writer suggested when the slugs stop eating it dont feed it to your tortoises cut it down and let new shoots grow and feed these.

Here is a contents list from the journal to give forum members an idea of what type of things are in there:

Editorial

Notes for authors

BCG Kay Gray Award 2008

Non-infectious diseases associated with husbandry probelms in chelonia

Respiratory disease in Chelonia

Sea turtles in Tobago: report from a university of glasgow undergraduate expedition

Community-based marine turtle conservation in Kosgoda, Sri Lanka: nesting results from 2005-2007

Managing Chelonia in a home environment

From corals to reptiles: the elkan Memorial Lecture attracts veterinary surgeons and herpetologist

Management of post hibernation rat bite hibernation in a spur thighed tortoise

The Oliphant Jackson award

Herpetological Bulletin abstract: non-lethal injury in Hermanns tortoise, in Croatia and Montenegro

Book Review

BCG committee

92 pages in all and a very good informative read

Helen - I have a 4 year old adopted Leopard who had an undiagnosed RNS - this turned into a pnuemonia and consequently damaged part of her lung. Since taking her to the vet I have tried different A/B's bisolvol powder to break up the mucus and I now regularly nebulise her just with 5mls normal saline. This seems to help her with her breathing at night.

I have been told she will always suffer with reduced air entry but like you I feel so sad listening to her.

Anything that you find helpful I would love to hear about.

The BCG is great for both the research it does and the support it gives keepers. Sarah I am pleased but suprised you are so supportive of them as when I have mentioned them on your forum in the past I have had a real ear bashing because they were apparenlty old fashioned in their ways and need to update the way they did things! (which I whole heartedly disagreed with)

I did use it for a time but it had no iffect as she was not infected. Usually when medication does not work it points to an environmental or allergic problem. Not sure about drops, you would have to ask at a health store.

Thanks...I have some echinea tabs now and am trying that ...plus the vet OK'd nasal flusing with F10 with a canula/syringe.
I have baytril again...just to protect the lungs...so what with flushing her nose, stabbing her and making her eat crushed tablets ...well she is sulking is all I can say!

I guess whilst she can sulk there is life in the old lady yet!
