OMG thats terrible.
Yep!

There's hardly a body of water in this area where there isn't at least one turt living wild, I've seen them in all of the local parks, fishing lakes, in the grounds of the hotel behind my house, in the marina at the end of the road, in all the local river systems including the Thames.

This lot live in a park in Brentford...

They were put there by park keepers who have caught them in other lakes in the borough, better than some authorities who simply have them euthanased.

We as responsible owners do not release our pets into the wild.

They do make a delicious soup when they get big!

Common Snapper.

With shops actually advising people to do this it's hardly surprising so many do get dumped, throw into the mix some people too stupid to look after any kind of pet, and it's a wonder every waterway in the country isn't completely overrun.

When I found a terrapin which had escaped his pond I was advised by my local pet shop to put 'it' in the freezer
At least I guess the local lakes preferable to that.

Some people eh.

Isn't it illegal to release pet turtles into the wild in the USA anyway, even if they are native species?

It is, and there are laws in place to prohibit collecting in most states.

That means that alot of turtles are now captive bred. all my snappers are captive bred.
