Default Ageing a tortoise

is there a way to age a tortoise simply by looking at them?

depends on the tortoise! some species like hermanns grow at a relatively even rate while some exotics ( like sulcatas) can be extremely variable. i have seen a 6 year ols sulc thats little over 8 inches and another one thats almost 18 inches. What type are you talking about? if its an older tortoise you can often tell that its a pensioner by the wear and tear on the shell. often rather smooth and with colour/pattern worn away.
