So it's perfectly ok to have the light on a timer then, it doesn't cause a surge or anything, although I suppose it is just like turning the swith on manually really, yes I think I am having a whole load of bad luck with this!

Is your bulb holder ok Denise - I had a loose wire in mine and it blew my Powersun - put an ordinary bulb in and see if that blows.

That's exactly what I have done, I've put a 100W bulb in and am going to see what happens, if it is the bulb holder I got that from the same place so they can have that back as well!! I am also going to try switching it off and on again a few times to check if it our electrics which can sometimes be a bit dodgy.
Does anyone else have any advice on trying to narrow down the problem, could it be that a 160w is too powerful????

As far as I can remember there were some teething problems with the 100 watt megarays but as far as I am aware those batches are no longer in circulation - you should be fine with a 160 watt.

My 100 watt did flicker and turn off initially a couple of times but now it is fine and I have had it around 6 weeks now.

I buy everything through Kimbos as Darren is very helpful.

Got mine from repitilekeeping.com who were also very good and very helpful, I just hope that they agree to change the bulb again. By the way the ordinary spotlight is still going strong!
It's all such a shame as even having the megaray on for just 2 days I could see the difference him already, was far more active, awoke earlier, eat more etc, it's him I feel sorry for.

Is the holder one of those with a contact that you can bend back out with the finger nail or a screwdriver? After any length of time these become pushed in and need to be drawn out slightly so the bulb can make contact with it.

I don't think it is the holder that is the problem as an ordinary bulb is working just fine and I don't think it is a contact problem as the bulb had definitely blown, bits of filament were at the bottom of the bulb.

Famous last words!!!!
The ordinary bulb that I put into the holder yesterday has blown this morning, so looks like it is the holder that is the problem.

This is driving me mad now as it will yet anoter week until Thomas gets his new lights, it's so frustrating, I feel like asking for a refund and going to buy the set up in a shop somewhere
