What's your idea of a large tank? What species are they btw? Sorry I presumed you meant standard slider or cooter. The lighting is real simple: In the wild they love basking in the sun, the suns rays warm them up, and provide UVB (aswell as UVA). So you need to provide a heat bulb, and a UVB bulb - minimum strength of 5.0, but if you can get the distance 10.0 is better.....or better still if your tank is large enough, get a MVB.

You say your turt is only 3-4 months old, what makes you think it's male? It's almost impossible to sex a turt of this age, it could be at least a couple of years before you know for sure whether it's male or female.
If it's a female it may lay eggs even if you don't have a male, they will just be infertile, turts are like chickens in that respect. But even if you had a male as well and the eggs were fertilized you could simply choose not to incubate them.
