Thanks everyone!
I just had a quick look on ebay, searching for slate samples, and loads came up. Various sizes from 10x10cm up to 60 x 60cm at around 99p per piece (but with postage of about £4 ). Still it's better than buying a massive pack! I also went on a few tile websites and they ALL offer samples, some as cheap as £1.50 with free postage. I don't know why I didn't think of the sample thing sooner. I guess I just didn't equate slate with tiles. I always think of tiles in terms of ceramic type tiles so never thought to try tile places!

I went into a tile shop (Tiles R Us or something similar!) and they sold tiles separately for £1 each... Much easier way of getting just a couple.

hi i worked for a demolition company for years and they used to sell second hand slates for repairs, weathered slates blend into the roof better visually than new. i wonder could you access some this way.

Bit far for me but I would urge anyone who needs 'furniture' for a tortoise table to have a rustle in a skip - it's free
