Default slate

Hey there
I was just wondering where people manage to get those nice big bits of slate from. I've been looking for a large piece of slate for my tortoise table but all the local gardening and DIY places near me only have roofing slates (not large enough and sold in packs of far too many) or heavy thick slabs or slate which are too heavy for the table and not nice and thin/flat-ish.

At the moment I'm using a smaller piece of thick slate and also a piece of some other rock (not sure what it is!) but I'd like to increase the area and the table can't take the weight of anymore of these thick bits.

soooo I was wondering where people have managed to find slate and what kind of sizes you're managing to get hold of.

thanks
Nancy

I use a 60cm x 30cm slate tile... you can buy single ones of these in places like TilesRus or you can buy samples off ebay which are free and you just pay the postage.

I'd pop into a tile warehouse and ask for a sample one (just to try it in your kitchen of course).......

Brilliant! Thanks guys. I didn't realise you could buy tiles/slate singly, as all the places I'd tried so far only sold them in packs of 10 or more. I'll have a look online and if not I think there's a tile shop near me so will give that a try too. Cheers

I don't pay for slate - I just pull it out of skips.

Well I have been keeping my eyes open near me for stuff like that but not been lucky so far. Will have to encourage my neighbours to replace their roof tiles I think
