all reptiles carry some disease mostly Salmonella but provided you either wash or use hand gel on your hands after handling them or their equipement the risk is very slim of catching anything, no more than you'd catch something from any other pet, I don't know what the running costs are but they are certainly there as is the cost of replacing broken or exhausted uv lights plus vet bills so please don't take this the wrong way but if you don't have any spare money do consider carefully before buying anything that needs heat/light/filtration etc, the costs of replacing parts can be exspensive and your animal can't go without.

Hard to say what the running costs are, I've never bothered to work it out myself and I don't know what you pay for your electricity anyway.

You can work it out yourself though, just calculate the Kilowatt Hour consumption of each piece of equipment, based on it's wattage and the number of hours it's on for each day, add them all up and multiply by the price you pay for electricity.

As Ann says all turtles can carry Salmonella, but so can thousands of other things you come into contact with every day of your life, even the loose change in your pocket is a potential source! So as long as you don't do anything stupid such as handling your turts then sticking your fingers in your mouth, or preparing food without washing first with antibacterial soap, then you should be fine.

I know this won't help any of you guys in the UK, but I am in NY and my bill last monthe was $746.00. I have two heat emitters, one UVB light, one very big Pond Pump. That is just for my animales. That is also with a central air condition. We didn't get the bill yet for this month, and we just put the heat on and turned off the air conditioner. I am very curious as to your bills over there.

Wow that's some bill, about £477 by my calculation!

I currently pay just over £800 (approx $1260) for the whole year for gas and electricity, that's for the whole household including the turt's indoor and outdoor setups.
