Default spur thigh and Herman

thanks...

Here goes..............deep breathe..............

I don't see why not! As long as the size difference is not too great & they are not sexually mature.

Ok, here I go........<stands up>.........
My name is Zoo-Man & I mix species!

I house my 4 Hermanns & 2 Horsefields together in a large indoor enclosure. I only put them together a month ago, but they are fine. No fighting, no attempts to breed, etc. They are all youngsters, with the oldest being around 5 years old.

I know I will get some stick for this, so I will sit here & await it!............

Some of the best tortoise keepers & breeders have mixed species Ali. I would never mix species from totally different habitats or with different nutritional needs (Hermanns with Red-Foots, for example), but I am yet to see a reason why young non-breeding species of similar requirements should not be mixed.

During a very traumatic summer this year I did make enquiries re this very thing myself. I have never done this, preferring to be safe rather than sorry every time. I was having to rely on a friend to care for some of my hatchlings for a time. Only having one russian hatchling at the time I asked the same question in the hope that it may be possible for a short period of time as they were hatched at similar times and both here. One supposedly knowledgeable keeper suggested I did this but kept stum about it to avoid back flack, but after asking Andy H he replied that it was not a good idea and that problems can and do arise from this practise. On the strength of this and my own original hunch I now advise to not do it under any circumstances.
Maybe Andy will reply as to the exact reasons why, as I do not feel qualified to do do this in any depth, other than the obvious possibility of cross contamination via alien pathogens.
Hope this makes sense
