Typical poor advice from the shop!
You're going to need more than just a tank and dock, for a start if it's less than a year old (what species BTW?) then it'll need a water heater to raise the water temp to around 25-26°C. Then you'll need a UVB lamp, preferably 8-10% output mounted over the basking area, and a source of heat too, this can be a simple 40-60W reflector spotlamp from any DIY store. Alternatively you can used a combined heat/UVB Mercury Vapour lamp if your tank is big enough. The basking spot temp should be around 32°C. If it's not eating there could be a number of reasons, assuming it's healthy then unfamiliarity with it's new environment and being too cold are most likely from what you've said. You don't mention a water filter, that's something else you'll need to get and it needs to be a decent size external one to cope with turt waste. A bit more info would be useful, such as the size of your tank and depth of water, the species of turt, some photos would help if you can post some. |

most shops that sell turtles are purely after the money, they don't tell you that you will need to dig a pond that also needs to be built more than once if you don't (like us) get it big enough the first time, they don't tell you how messy they are in a tank and how often the water has to be changed even with a good filter, we had 3 filters when ours were babies and they still weren't enough without a weekly clean and they certainly don't tell you about how fast they grow!, most houses are heated so room temp is fine as long as they have a basking area ours moved out to the conservatory when the tank got to big for the room
and they did love sitting in the sunlight, two ponds later and they are now still outside and I hope will stay there this winter its well sheltered, next to the house and faces south in fact they were basking this morning, they love earthworms especially big wiggly ones and will fight over them, Romeo will fan Juliets face very gently with his feet and it looks really sweet. |
