They need correct conditions, are suseptable to draughts/runny noses.
It might well depend on where they come from. If from a breeder, you can know the history of the tortoise. If wild caught the same as any wild caught tortoises they can come with problems.
I would say you need at least good research on stars, which would include asking other star keepers the pros and cons of keeping them. Or have experience with other heat loving reptiles.
Most first time buyers (including me yonks ago) dont have any real knowledge on how to keep tortoises, they wing it. Thirty years ago, there was not the internet to sorce information about husbandry, only outdated books and the BCG that I knew of.
Med tortoises you can get away with this. But the more tender speices do need a little knowledge of how and what makes tortoises tick.
Maybe I am wrong, but some of the really basic questions that repeatedly come up, shows me that reasearch is low on new keepers lists. Its not a problem trying to help them out, but just shows lack of research. And you cant tell on a computer who has the basics/research and who has not

hi yep see what you mean. mine are from a breeder and have had them for just over a year without any problems, so thats why im thinking of getting a couple more.
