true although they are ment to be difficult with humidity and so on arent they. was thinking if getting a relly top notch vented large viv to house it in then the temp levels and humidity would still be easy enough to control. really cant wait but it may be a while yet!

i really hope that when i get one it turns out to be male. i think its the male that gets the hour glass shape and i think that looks so cute

I'm not quite sure why the stance with hibernating temperate turtles is "they do in the wild, but you don't need to bother in captivity", but with tortoises it's "they do in the wild, so in captivity you really should".

I know, I often think that too. Maybe because it's harder to control with turtles. If you don't have a deep outdoor pond to let them get on with it, how would you do it indoors? Even if you do have a pond, it's still less easily controlled.

Glad you mentioned 'temperate turtles' there James... it should be pointed out that like tortoises from warmer climates, tropical turtles do not hibernate... although some go through periods of aestivation.
