I don't have any stars, but I don't think it's that they're simply hard to keep. They're more delicate, and you have to be sure you have everything right. If you really want stars, I'd recommend getting your setup running for a while first and monitoring the temp etc. before adding torts, as it needs to be reliable and constant. They don't like to be taken out their enclosure too much either I don't think, so would be no good if you want a tort you can handle regularly. If you get their setup and care 100%, then you shouldn't have any issues.

As I'm sure you've been told, there are others that are more hardy. If you're not sure, then I'd recommend starting with something else. I get the impression you're not sure by the fact you posted this thread

They are beautiful though, I understand completely why you want some!

I own 1 at the mo, hopefully more soon, and i have also read they are not for the 'beginner' keeper....

The star was my 1st tort, so i guess i was the beginner keeper, but it's like any species really, do your homework with all their requirements etc and once your happy with the knowledge then you decide whether or not to take the plunge......

Up to press i aint come across any problems with mine, its only a young un at almost 1yr old, but its steady away really........

As for pro's and con's.......not sure really, maybe the price may put some off, but then they are not as 'common' as some other species so some may see that as a slight downside......it really depends what floats your boat to be honest, i love em, and will get more sometime soon i hope
