Tortoises cannot comprehend glass - if they can see through it they think they can actually go through it - then get very stressed when they cannot.

Default Message for katie

Hello katie...just to let you know...she's in a Tank..yes made of glass thats well ventilated with a thermometer in that I monitor everyday 90f and never drops or increases. I also have a heat mat under a quarter of the tank thats controlled by a thermostat and just measured the tank and it's 3ft by 1.5 ft. The bedding she uses is herbifloor,we bath her everymorning spray her at least twice aday if you can help to improve my little redfoots quality of life I'd love to hear from you .

Thanks.(newbie redfoot owner).....

Hiya i keep red foots adult and sub adults, some say keeping red foots in a viv is ok because it keeps in the humidity, but I personaly dont use one i have a huge table in my garage for them with 3 foots of top soil and children play bark on top. You also have to think long term where are you going to put him/her when she is huge? a tank will not do it.

What substrate are you using? What diet are you feeding? Because you got from a pet shop your tortoise is more than likely wild caught i would urge you to take a poo sample to your vets to check for worms, you dont need an appointment just take a sample in and ask them to ring you with the results.

Also in the wild red foots would hardly come across sun light as they would live in the dark forest they would only come accross pockets of sun, therefore if you use too much UVB their eyes can become damaged, but because you are using a tub and not a trex, tubes dont give off as much UVB but i would limit it to 8 hours a day.

Any more questions please ask away

Heat mats are a huge no no they burn tortoises
I have never heard of herbifloor before so cannot coment but repti bark is good as it hold water. Remember its not air humidity you want but grown humdity.

I've NEVER understood this either. I have two redfoots, both can see out of the glass and BOTH know they cannot go through it.. Believe me they are smarter creatures than i think a lot of people give them credit for.

I've had mine since hatchlings and BOTH of them know they can't walk through the see through side, even when you open a door they will come up but go no further and i regularly leave the glass open for 20mins in the morning to give the tank a good blast with fresh air.

hey again, wel first off i wouldn't recommend using a heatmat, they're not ideal for tortoises.. n what are you doin for their outdoor enclosure atm and as they grow? not criticising it's just they grow to be pretty big buggers n i'm presumin uv thought this through
