Default Eye problems

Hi, over the past 2 days, our little torts left eye hasnt been opening properly. His other eye is totally fine, shiney and black, but the other, its like its totally shut. After giving him a long bath yesterday, he finally opened it, but it seemed to be a struggle. The same has happened again today. We are taking him to the vet tomorrow anyway, so i shall mention is then. Has anyone else had problems like this? any ideas what it could be?

Is there any discharge coming from the eye?

I have trouble opening my eyes in the morning!!

When I first had my Hermans one of them was winking for a week so I took her to the vet and the vet said "It sometimes happens" lets hope your vet is a less vague!!

I would be interested to hear how you get on at the vets.

no, no discharge at all. its very odd. when he wakes up, its like his bad eye is swollen, it looks puffy. then once ive bathed him, and put some water on eye, it take him ages to open it, and he does it very slowly. but when it is open, its fine, shiney and black, just like the other. i was just wondering if anyone else had had problem like this.
Will defo mention it to the vet, we're going to get him checked for worms, as he seems to be sleeping a hell of a lot during the day and isnt very active. if e does have worms, is it easily treatable?

mentioned this eye thing to my vet and he said it was perfectly normal (my little one had same thing the other week) he said to just bathe the eye n see how it got on..then a discharge appeared n vet was adamanant all was still well but suggested bathin it ina slightly salted warm water solution...then the faeces went funny..now i'm not sayin they're linked but was very strange, they ended up having antibiotic jabs n probiotic paste that u have to administer orally.. .tho the vet wouldn't tell me wat they were being treated for n was vague throughout..so maybe it was a case of just treat it n ask questions later

i'm moving house soon so won't have any need to use him again, not that i would in future tbh

I had this trouble when getting all my herps checked. I asked the vet where I take Barney my chocolate Lab if they know about reptiles. They sounded okay, then I turned up with my Beardies and Hermans and didnt have much of a clue. Even to the point where she didnt know where to microchip my tortoise!
Wouldnt the world be a far better place if they said, "hey, you know what? I'm sorry but I have no idea."

She wanted to look in a book first then has (I assume) her first go on my little Herman!

:-(

Oh I meant to say,

What substrate does he have in his indoor enclosure and also do you have long grass. This can rub in his eye and cause Irretation. Nothing getting in his eyes when he explores?

substrate i use is 50/50 play sand and top soil, i did think maybe he had got some in his eye, but i checked and he didnt have anything. i guess i'll just have to wait and see, and just keep bathing it with warm water

hi, just thought i'd let you know that we took mr bojangles to the vet today, and it turns out that he has a slight eye infection, so the vet as given us some stuff for that. also, he has worm eggs in his poo, so the vet has given us stuff to get rid of them also. But other than that, he seems fine, we told the vet about him sleeping quite a bit, and the vet thinks its cuz we pamper him too much, and the fact that he doesnt have to walk very far for food! lol. but his shell is fine and no signs of pyramiding, so thats good.

Worm loads make them miserable this could account for his lethargy. He may also be very quiet during the worming too.......just make sure he gets a few warm baths a day to encourage him to pass them. You will also need to change his substrate on a daily basis too, to avoid re-infestation. A few old towels will work well.......change and boil wash (with no detergent or softener) every day until all the worms are gone.

Keep us informed of his progress won't you......hope he picks up soon poor thing
