it is confusing but all you have to bear in mind is 'would this happen in the wild' and you cant go far wrong!

I've been reading all your advice over the last few days and dutifully took Hurley (horsfield) to the vets today for a check up and worming. He is a little plump but not as much as I feared (thank god!) the vet was very good, but said I was best not to hibernate him this year as he is so young and just to set up his indoor with a uvb bulb as he won't be out as much. He also said that when he is older to only hibernate for 12 weeks. But now reading all this I am in a quandry as to what to do!

Well, in the wild he would hibernate, he would have too, there would be no food <g>. Russians are prone to over feeding more than any other species, in the wild they would only eat for 3 months of the year. The rest of their time would be spent either hibernating or estivating. As your tortoise is already overweight, if he was mine, I would definately hibernate him if he was healthy enough.

Does he have worms? Remind me how long you have had him and where he came from please.

I got him as a birthday present and he was purchases from the tortoise shop and was told he was bred here, but then someone said they import from Slovenia too, so the vet thought we'd be as well to get him into a worming routine to be on the safe side. I'd like to hibernate him if it helps to get his weight down as I am really worried that he'll have a deformed shell or something. I hate the thought that I am being cruel through kindness and causing him pain. Call me a softy but its the last thing I'd want to do and usually before I get a new pet I like to read up on them, as he was a suprise its trying to read all there is and not hurt him in my naivety!

Hey im worried about hibernating to, i have only had my Stan for 4 months, and i got told the same, not to hibernate until he was five, according to his cert which im trying to upload, he was hatched in 2005 so tha only makes him 2! what do you think i should do, im scared of doing it wrong and him not waking up! Do you think it would be ok to wait and do him next year, would it help if i fed him less through the winter months so he wouldnt put on too much weight?

Thankies
Love Katie xx
