Question Best Substrate For A Herman Tort?

Have Researched Many Diff Websites And Im Just Getting More Confused. At The Mo My Herbie Is On Wood Chippings But Want To Get Him On Something A Bit More Comfortable As I Feel He Doesnt Like Walking On Them! Ive Heard Of Having A Percentage Mixture Of Soil And Sand But What Do You Guys Think?

Oh Getting My Tort Table Sorted It Has Now Taken Up Most Of The Back Wall In My Spare Room So He Now Has An Enclosure Size Of About Six Foot By 2.5 Foot!! Sound Okay??

I use a 50/50 mix of top soil/play sand and I also add a large seed tray filled deep with hemp.

I really would get him off the wood chippings asap as they harbour mould spores which are not good!

Tort table sounds lovely!

i have been having the same problem. every thing i read says something different. what about heat? Most things i have read say use a bulb ( some say with a tile under it) but 2 have said heat mats. i have also heard about the bulbs that do both the UVB and heat. are thay any good?

PS. sorry for stealing your thread.

don't use heat mats with tortoises. the t-rex combined heat/uvb bulb is probably one of the best on the market. alternatively you can use a red spot lamp, and a seperate uvb tube

I use a combined uv/uvb bulb and I do not put the slate directly under it - would get too hot. The slate they eat off is away from the direct heat.

Please never use heat mats under a tort, they effectively heat the tortoises organs, I will try to add a pic I have of a tort that spent 6 yrs on a mat and has the burns to show for it. Torts need heat from above.

Please refer to the TT (Tortoise Trust Web - Start Page) for information about tortoises - there is so much incorrect information out there it scares me!
