I have a nice new 48" x 30" x 12" tort table for sale if you're interested, and in the London area as it would have to be collected, only £40.

ideally the bigger the better and the deeper the better.. i'd say at the very minimum 3ft by 3ft by about 1ft deep..

Lighting, the best on the market is the combined t-rex bulb which gives heat and uvb.. alternatively a exo-terra uvb tube, and a red spot lamp work well

Make sure there is like a covered area, or hides that they can use to get away from the heat..a deep substrate also helps this as the tortoises will dig to thermoregulate

50/50% playsand/soil mix works well, hemp also for substrate

If your house isnt especially cold, normal room temperature is fine at night, there is no need for a heatmat indoors at all, only outside on the ceiling/side of outside enclosure if its really cold!

What size is your tortoise? The bigger the table the better IMO.

As a temp measure to get the tort out of the viv you can always use an underbed storage box, these only cost a couple of pounds - or even an old large drawer.

As advised your tortoise does not need any form of heat at night. Heat mats are not needed at night and in fact can be really harmful to tortoises.

LOL thats what i am going to use to start. Is conti-board/hardboard ok to make a table out of? im planning cont-board for the sides and hard board (think that is what it is called, the stuff they use on the bottom of drawers anyway) for the bottom. Does this sound ok ?

Hardboard is too flimsy, the bottom will fall out when you fill it up with sand/soil, that stuff is heavy! I used 12mm exterior ply for the base of mine.
