Torts don't get lonely, in the wild they are solitary creatures coming together only to mate.
Two males are very likely to fight when they become sexually mature.

I believe it depends on the age of the tortoise and how it has been kept previously.
An older tortoise that has been on its own for years will be perfectly happy, they are solitary creatures in the wild. However, if it is a hatchling that from hatching has had the company of others then I think they thrive with company. I know a lot of breeders who only sell tortoises in pairs because they have had company. Having seen many hatchlings all come together for sleeping I support this. If the hatchling has been housed on its' own then it will be fine on its own as it does not know company - if you get my drift. As for keeping same sex together; males will no doubt fight when they reach sexual maturity to establish the alpha male. Sometimes once it has been sorted it is ok, sometimes it is not - the alpha male will constantly pick on the other tort and separation is required. Depends on the tortoises and there is no rule of thumb. HTH Tamie |

Like stated it is more likely that males will fight once sexually mature.
