How many litres is the tank? If, lets say it is 200L which is a little short of 4', then try and get a filter that pumps 400L Per Hour. Or more. The larger the better.

I'd go for something bigger than that, it's impossible to have too much filtration and the bigger the filter the better! Although the Fluval 205 is rated for 200 litre tanks that's for fish which produce less mess than turts do, it would really struggle in a tank that size.
It does need to be an external filter, internal filters are next to useless for turts as they don't have sufficient media capacity. I'd get the biggest external you can and fill it up with Alfagrog or other bio-media, if it's a really big one you could even put a bag of carbon in there for sparkly clear water.
I'd recommend a Fluval 405, Rena Filstar XP3, or if you can get one for a good price an Eheim 2250, which is a better quality filter than the others with greater media capacity.

Another alternative, and much cheaper, is simply to make your own like I did! A powerful submersible powerhead pumps water up to a plastic tub of some sort (like a large Tupperware box etc...) which is filled with filter media, the filtered water then returns to the tank via gravity. You can build one of these for less than £50 and they are just as effective as any of the bought filters, it's basically a small version of a pond filter and works in exactly the same way.
