Default Minimum temperature at night

Hi all!

We are thinking about getting tortoises, probably young Mediterranean or Russian ones.

They should be in a room where it sometimes gets somewhat cold at night.

Last winter I haven't measured temperatures there but my guess is around 15 degrees Celsius or so at night. This summer it was also quite cool there overall when daytime max temperatures reached only 12 degrees or a little more and night temperatures outside fell to 7 degrees.

We have now Leopard geckos in that corner but they have a heat mat all night on. A tortoise table should be on their side.

Would it be too cold for tortoises?

As long as the temp does not drop below 10 degrees then that will be fine. Most houses the temps without central heating on will be higher than that though. I assume that you willl have your tortoise outside though and you are talking about temps in the room as only a night time situation?

Do not use a heat mat for a tortoise.

Hi Tamie

For outside we will have to build an appropriate cage or something with a basking lamp I fear. Just in case that next summer is as miserable as this one.

Right now, at 11 AM, it's exactly 14.9 degrees outside, it's cloudy and a cold wind is blowing. And there were lots of days this summer even colder. 12 degrees and raining all the time.

Most of the time even roses didn't grow and plants in their mini-greenhouses neither because there were simply no sunshine at all.

That is one thing I have already read. But thanks anyway.
