Default Sorry to ask again.....

Hi
Please don't bite my head off but what is the best uv bulb or light that I can get for Hurley? At the moment he has his basking bulb and goes out but for some of the winter he will need one when he can't go outside. I went to a reptile shop but to be honest they did not seem to know what they were talking about so I came away!
Below is a picture of his indoor table and I was hoping to put a uv strip light on the bottom part which is where his food is but I am not sure how to fix it to the table. So any advice/ideas would be appreciated!

It's definitely one for desert reptiles what has a figure "10.0" normally.

"10.0" means 10% UVB but I actually don't know 10% from what. But it's more than 5.0 or 2.0.

The flourescent tubes should be relatively near to the torts. Often is said 4 or five inches.

A mercury vapor bulb for a hot spot is often said to be 12 inches or 16 but there should be a hint in the instructions that come with that lamp.

The lamps should cover a great part of the table.

So if I understand you right it should be flourescent tube. It comes generally with some plastic fixes so you would need to screw those into the wood or it gets hold only by the electric cables what is fine, too.

If you would like to have in the middle then some sort of wooden or metal frame would be necessary.

If the budget allows you could have two tubes on every side as the brighter and the more UVB the better.

Where does he spend most of his time Tash? Does he bask under the lamp more than spending time downstairs near the food bowl?

Personally I would hook him up with a Powersun UVB combined lamp rather than a fluorescent tube

Acutally, the lamp should only cover a small area of the table or a cool end will be impossible to achieve........I would'nt put it in the middle as the heat will then cover most of the table.
I would also go for a mercury vapour combined heat/lamp ......... if your tortoise manages the ramp okay, I would put it up there..........tortoises only need somewhere to warm up they don't need constant heat.

But I was talking about a flourescent tube and that gives almost no heat at all.

If you suggest a mercury vapor bulb that's fine but it's another thing.

Also, you have to watch the tortoise(s). If they spend much time out of the range of this mercury vapor bulb hot spot then they will inside a home receive no UVB at all.

The implications and consequences of that would give enough stuff for a new thread.

Hi again,

I have never used a flourescenttube and never recommended to do so, as for them getting enough u.v. mine seem to spend a well balanced time between basking under it and playing away from it. mine are very young hatchlings so there shells were still a bit soft when i got them but now with the bulb and a good diet they have firmed up and are growing very well.

Sorry i can't help on tube!

Rachael

The lamps should cover a great part of the table.

Above is what you said, a lamp gives the impression of a combined, if you meant a tube then perhaps you could have been more specific.....both are very different when it comes to giving out heat and to have a 'lamp' cover a great part of the table, there would be no where for a cooler area.

Also, you have to watch the tortoise(s). If they spend much time out of the range of this mercury vapor bulb hot spot then they will inside a home receive no UVB at all.

Which is why tortoises need to be outdoors.......there is not a lamp on the market that comes anywhere close to the sun. Mine only come indoors to hibernate.

Hi Phoebe,

You seem to have got very rattled by my link, what you have failed to notice is that i was talking about my hatchlings and the advice i was given by the expert breeder i got them from and as you know hatchlings can only go outside on warm sunny days and mine are so young when i have put them out in there outside pen all they do is bury themselves thus not getting any u.v. in that way.

All breeders and experts worth their salt recommened the new Active U.V. B bulbs over the now out dated tubes, which give very little U.V. light !!!

Phoebe time to keep up with changes
