I don't have a problem so much with the Chinese culture as with the hypocrisy of Tesco, they are a UK company and to my mind should behave as such wherever in the world they choose to operate, not simply do whatever they can get away with just because local laws don't prevent it.
If they were exploiting child labour in other countries there would be an outcry, and this isn't so different. Tesco argue that the turtles killed in their stores are unable to retract their heads fully into their shells, thus making decapitation quick and easy, problem is that's actually a lie as anyone who knows anything about these species will tell you! They can and do retract their heads fully, and to decapitate them often involves the butcher prising their heads from their shells, or literally digging through the shell with a knife to reach the animal's head, hardly quick, easy, or humane as Tesco claim in their statements. Personally I don't think the petition will do any good at all, Tesco will simply ignore it and continue to claim that the turtles are killed humanely. A more effective stategy may be for lots of people to do what I did, which was to go into Tescos one busy Saturday morning, and start asking in a loud voice at the meat counter where the live turtles are because you'd like to buy some. After a few times the local Tesco actually banned me from the store! If more people were to do the same that just might be newsworthy enough for local papers etc to take notice, and the resulting publicity would do more than any petition will ever achieve.

the only reason I said what I did is because online petitions are pretty much useless anyway except in a few examples like road tax and other big things.
I signed it myself, I just think that its pretty much useless, Tesco may stop selling them with a massive push and probably government or a big animal rights organisation stepping in. But thats the tip of the iceburg, sadly it will make no difference at all in the long run. |
