Honest question now guys. Would you have a problem if it was turtle soup being sold in cans?

I don't have a problem so much with the Chinese culture as with the hypocrisy of Tesco, they are a UK company and to my mind should behave as such wherever in the world they choose to operate, not simply do whatever they can get away with just because local laws don't prevent it.

If they were exploiting child labour in other countries there would be an outcry, and this isn't so different.

Tesco argue that the turtles killed in their stores are unable to retract their heads fully into their shells, thus making decapitation quick and easy, problem is that's actually a lie as anyone who knows anything about these species will tell you!

They can and do retract their heads fully, and to decapitate them often involves the butcher prising their heads from their shells, or literally digging through the shell with a knife to reach the animal's head, hardly quick, easy, or humane as Tesco claim in their statements.

Personally I don't think the petition will do any good at all, Tesco will simply ignore it and continue to claim that the turtles are killed humanely.

A more effective stategy may be for lots of people to do what I did, which was to go into Tescos one busy Saturday morning, and start asking in a loud voice at the meat counter where the live turtles are because you'd like to buy some. After a few times the local Tesco actually banned me from the store!

If more people were to do the same that just might be newsworthy enough for local papers etc to take notice, and the resulting publicity would do more than any petition will ever achieve.

Christ u try to raise awareness n this is what you get. I despair at some people.

outcry's of 'it's not going to make a difference' mean that it wont..because if everyone feels the same then of course naf all is going to get done about it.

Like i said before i know some people will start the 'we eat cows' debate, but they ARE killed humanely. It's law in england now that they must be killed as humanely as possible

also dan u said " In western world, we sell live lobsters that are boiled alive". That is no longer true either. The lobster is stabbed through the head, and the knife pulled downwards..which yes sounds more graphic, but causes instant death as to the being boiled alive issue.

I simply posted this petition for those people who feel, like me, that the way tesco go about it is inhumane. Not to mention the risk of extinction of certain species.

Yes i know it's chinese culture to eat all kinds of things, we consider to be taboo..but Tesco is a UK Based company..and they're going against everythin they claim to hold true..just because they're in China and think they can get away from it..n that's the sick thing.

Also can we have enough of the 'turtle soup anyone' posts. If ya don't have anything constructive to post..it's not compulsary, you dont HAVE to post.

N no i wouldn't eat turtle soup either. I'm no longer a veggie, so i'm not gonna be hypocritical..it's not the pure fact they're eatin turtles.it's the manner in which Tesco is dealing with this, and they way in which they are killed (heads yanked from shells..restrained etc), also the risk of extinction.

Anyways. Like i say if u agree then sign the petition..if not then don't. It's simple really. N sorry if i sounded miffed off in this post but i didnt start the topic to start a lengthy moral discussion.i just wanted to make people aware of it.

Katie

the only reason I said what I did is because online petitions are pretty much useless anyway except in a few examples like road tax and other big things.

I signed it myself, I just think that its pretty much useless, Tesco may stop selling them with a massive push and probably government or a big animal rights organisation stepping in. But thats the tip of the iceburg, sadly it will make no difference at all in the long run.
