I am not sure there is a lack of breeders Andy, if you are prepared to travel you won't have any problems finding a breeder. I travelled over 100 miles for mine! And they are worth it!

Of course the sudden lack of imported tortoises for sale in pet shops causing an increased demand for their members captive bred animals along with an increase in prices wouldn't of crossed their minds.

All seems good to me, where do I sign

"Gordon bennet" he is at it again ...was it too quiet in the shelled section of late? had the entertaining threads/posts all but dried up?

Thankyou once again, for reminding why I rarely post in this section of the forum.

If everything is as you suggest in regards to importing torts, then can you explain why so many imported torts die?...can you also explain, WHY import torts?

I am a keeper/breeder of torts, I have not joined the TPG, as far as I am aware, most genuine UK tort keepers still charge less than the pet shops/dealers.

As for planning on an increase in price for genuine UK C/B torts (if imports cease), that certainly has not crossed my mind, and I doubt it has crossed other keepers minds either.

As I have stated before, there are many many tort keepers in the UK, it is only a matter of time before they too will have hatchlings available, sooner than you think...T.T.

Couldn't have said it better myself Terrific Tortoise.

If torts are imported with such care, could you explain why, when i got my eldest horsfield tort she still had the scars on her legs from where they tie them together with string???? If the importers gave two ***** about the tortoises they were sending abroad surely they would deworm them? or at least have a house vet who could check them over to make sure they're fit for the journey?? My youngest tort was an import also, and was very very ill..lots of vets bills later, and touch wood i've pulled her around.

Uk breeders are ALOT cheaper than the import pet shop torts..n tbh i've yet to meet a breeder in the uk who see's it as just a business.. they all take great pride in their animals, quite a few do vet checks on future owners...n are STILL cheaper than pet shops. Tbh i really don't think they would have thought to push the prices up.

you could argue if u stop importing torts, that the demand for tortoises on the captive bred sector will rise.. (more the better at least they'll be CB!).. So maybe this will mean Waiting lists..like for creatures like african pygmy hedgehogs, skunks, rare morphs of snakes etc What's the problem there? TBH some would say that it's making the hobby of keeping tortoises elitest, but imo it's weeding out people who aren't 110% Sure they want and can provide for the animals.

Alot of people..and I include myself in this partly...see tortoises in pet shops n think 'i want one..they're soo cute, look how cramped they're housed ' without truly realising what they will be undertaking. They get told vivs n pellets are ok..n honestly think they're doing the right thing. I was lucky that some relatives of mine (mother and great aunt) had kept torts many years previous..so i knew the pellet thing was totally unsuitable..but honestly thought a viv was best for their nighttime accomodation, until i discovered RFUK n then the tortoisetrust . What i'm saying is..maybe if they become less readily available..it'll make it more difficult to buy tortoises...and at least then people really will have to look around the net more to find breeders, n in doing so maybe more people are likely to discover places like this, tortoisetrust, shelledwarriors etc
