Well I don't know about smallest species in the world, but as for smallest tortoise.. there is a picture here

The smallest - and cutest - creatures you will ever see | the Daily Mail

Walter, the smallest tortoise in the world, perches on the head of 35-year-old giant tortoise Otto at Hanover Zoo. While the largest tortoise measures up to 43in, the smallest is only 3in.

I always thought the Egyptian was the smallest tort. Egyptians cannot be easily found for sale. I have been after a mate for mine for a long time.

Hi MPF,

Just found this article on the Tortoise Trust sight, but been unable to find some pic's yet;

Speckled Padloper: Homopus signatus
The world's smallest tortoise - adult males are only 85 mm long. In captivity, it requires almost identical conditions to Chersina angulata, but with a strong preference for plenty of rocks to climb on and hide under. Highly intolerant of damp and cold. Do not mix with other species. Must have plenty of exposure to bright sunlight. If kept outside of its natural range, some indoor accommodation is almost essential. Diet as above

Hope this helps!

Rachael

The speckled padloper (homopus signatus) is the smallest species is the world, most of the homopus group are fairly small.

You will be very unlikely to come across one as they are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity and as such are not common. I don't know of any in the UK.
