Default Male and Female Herman torts together

My parents have 2 herman tortoises - a male and female (so we believe!). They are 3 years old and live in the same viv, recently the male has started to "bother" the female, it happens quite a lot now and we try to stop him when we see him doing it. Surely they are too young for this sort of behaviour?!? Should they be separated? Is this a common problem? and if so does anyone have any advice. Thanks

Yeah they should be seperated, the male will continue to harass the female, alot like humans really lol! its meant to be something like 3 females to 1 male?

I agree with Amylou - the problem wont go away, he will keep harrassing her. The female will get stressed as a result of his behaviour aswell

They seem a bit young to sex for definate,it could be a dominance thing but if one is getting stressed then you should consider seperating, also a viv is not the best place to house tortoises. have a look through the threads here!

Is this meant to be "like humans", too?

So should they be permanently separated or just for periods of time to give her a break?! What should they be kept in instead while they are young? as when they are old enough they will live outside (except for hibenation time)

They should be kept indoors in a Tortoise Table. Basically a roofless box, that gives far more ventilation and doesnt allow humidity to build up so high.

Like already mentioned it could just be a dominance issue..i had that initially when i got my youngest tort Kiara. The older of the two was showing mating behaviour..so i thought she was a he..anyways after a couple of days they settled down. And now they both have their bossy moments but are fine.

If it does turn out that they're male and female you'd have to get at least one more guaranteed female, ideally two..to give them all a break from the male..alternatively you'd HAVE to seperate them to prevent the female getting stresssed n becoming ill

HTH

Thats great - thanks! We don't want her getting stressed out. I may be asking a really dumb question but how do you set the heat lamp up if there is no roof on the box??
