nope not good at all if they eat sand...it clogs up their intestines and they die......(impaction)

i use lots of substrate in my enclosure including compacted soil...decorative bark and sheets of grass

You can use a sand and sail mix 50/50 or hemp, its up to you.

sand soil mix of 50/50 is okay, and doesn't seem to cause impaction.great for them to dig in as well. Hemp is the second best substrate after play sand/top soil mix

Sand/soil mixed is fine, though I find in the house it is easier to use hemp as it is lighter. If you want to move the tort table or even clean the whole lot out it is much easier when it has hemp in it!

I go to a horse food supplier and buy a big bale of hemp for under £10, it will last you a very long time if you have somewhere dry to keep the bale. You can ask for a bale of hemp or Aubiose which is just a brand name, the place I go to sells both.
