Default Eating Air??????

My baby redfoot is "eating air" also trying to nibble at it's feet. Now it's eating well drinking well took a while for it to settle in but it's now pooing and from reading the other thread and comparing it to my other red foot its the right texture and colour.

Don't think it's eyes are 100% well there looking abit runny and glazed again my older tort has bright wide health looking eyes. Now the baby is very active loves to climb and adventure....but this eating air nibbling it's feet and not so health eyes is worrying me.

I've seen in a thread that someone has mentioned this eating air so I thought maybe someone out there may have the answers.

PLEASE HELP.

No it's not a yawn...mainly does it when it's eating...it's like it struggles with co-ordination..thats the best I can explain it! It goes for a bite of food misses and eats air!

Do torts yawn? Think I've seen mine do it if they do. It's cute when they stretch. Not sure about the eating air thing but maybe it's struggling to see the food if it's got poorly eyes?? Just guessing but I'd get it to the vet to get those eyes sorted

I would have an exotics vet have a look at your tort's eyes to be on the safe side? Please make sure he is a tort vet though.

Better to be safe than sorry and if there is something wrong with it's eyes better to know now rather than later.

Well your redfoots eyes, if they are a little runny this is perfectly fine, its just a way that the tortoises maintain a small amount of humidity directly and is nothing to worry about unless the amount discharged is a very large amount i.e. big drops.

About the eating air, this is quite strange and can't say i've seen mine do anything similar other than yawning or when they occasionally miss the food.

Also the foot thing, this is semi normal, as the tortoise may be able to smell small parts of food that have come off and the residue or particles are still on the feet. It won't harm itself by biting its legs or feet they have very very tough skin there.

If you are in doubt about the eye thing, take it to a vet just to be sure, but both of mine have really small amounts just under the eyes and i've been told by a lady who has been breeding them for the last 20years or so that it is quite common and assists in creating humidity.
