You need childrens playsand to mix with your top soil

Rocks/pebbles are fine as long as they are big enough for the tort not to eat them, you don't have to mix them in with the sand/soil, you could just heap them somewhere for the tort to climb on, or place them down like a floor in one area of the enclosure.

I wouldn't house my torts in a viv (been there and done that... Not a good idea), they are much better of in a tortoise table. That is something that looks like a book case laying on its back, but with the shelves out!

Playsand is what you need... Argos sell it at about £2.50 a bag. A 60 (topsoil) 40 (sand) is about right then it won't be too dusty and irritate your torts eyese.

Thanks that's exactly what I needed to know. I didn't think the red sand could be right. But until I get a new box made is it ok to put the soil in the viv? Why/how would they eat a small rock? I hope the answer isn't obvious. I just mean in the wide they wouldn't do that would they?

Okay this may seem silly as its the wrong time of year to be thinking of it I suppose but the prospect of hibernating Georgie my Hermann tort is worrying.

You see Ive had Speedy my other tortoise for over 30 years and we have just been used to him hibernating in a box in the shed. Then there is the fact that I was told Georgie hasnt hibernated before.

Ive read the different methods of hibernation. I like the fridge method but can I just use my everyday household fridge?

Guess I just need that little bit of confidence that all will be fine come hibernating time.

I've not hibernated before either Vicky so am not looking forward to it this winter I have a separate fridge in my garage which I'll use if I decide on the fridge method.

I'd put up a thread asking this question and then people with experience will help you out. They may not see the question in here.
