we use a 10.0 striplight which is on 4 hours a day.we were told only to have it on for this length of time due to the reds having sensitive eyes and too much uv can cause eye damage. my enclosure is around 32 under the basking light area,are you using a red bulb seems to be a glow on the shell in one of the pics.

Yes, there is a red bulb for the basking area again as recommended by the pet shop. He is lovely, but very shy at the moment. We aim to get some better pictures once he gets used to us as we are avid photographers.

You should enter the picture of the month competion on this forum. No Torts or turtles have been in the final 10 yet. Why not have a go?

I would change this bulb for a spot light and use a stat to control temps

HI,

I don't own redfoots but know people who do, if you want the best for him you really need to house him in a tort table, he does look bright eyed which is a good sign, their is a sticky that is a guide in what look for to see if your tort is healthy, i would think at the moment it is him settling in!!

Here is a link for you it s for med torts only, but the reason i'm given you it is because it shows you how to measure your tort and how to set up a tort table, including the right lighting which applies to most torts!!

http://www.tlady.clara.net/TortGuide/Guide.PDF

And here is a site set up for Redfoot owners, as well as Shelled Warriors where sarah runs it and keeps redfoots, so well worth looking at both site and becoming a member;

Basil the Redfoot Tortoise

Shelled Warriors :: Index

Ihope that helps you!!

Hello your red foot looks lovely at that weight i would say he was about 3-4 years old. My 7 year old is 1kg and my adults 5kg.
Red foots live in the rainforest, they would come accross pockets of sun and UVB. Not like meds. UVB can damage eyes so limit to 5-8 hours a day.
Humidity is important, remember you can never get a red foot too wet!
Diet 60% greens 40% fruit. Treat of soaked cat biscuits or chicken and mushrooms every two weeks.
Ref vivs some say they are ok for reds as they hold humidity but i dont use them.
